Children's books embrace digital technology

Okay…here’s the scenario. You decided to brave it for once and go out for a nice dinner with your spouse and toddlers. As soon as you sit, they’re fascinated by the table or booth you’re sitting in, exploring everything around them, and perhaps, taking part in some people watching. You give your order to the waitress (specifying to please bring the todders’ food first) and then you wait. Your toddlers are starting to get anxious. They want to jump on the seat, bang on the table, or the worst case scenario, throw a temper tantrum. What’s a parent to do?
Thankfully, there’s a variety of options today in digital learning and parents can simply pull out their iPod or iPhone and entertain their children with apps that read children’s books. There’s a whole bunch of applications that are focused towards kids and even focus on education. Most books are $1.99/ea from iTunes and can also be purchased on your phone from anywhere.
Some parents worry that eBooks and iPhone apps will replace the traditional books that they can hold in their hands, but this new technology can be great for times when you don’t have a traditional book handy. They can be great for driving in the car, on an airplane, or our dreaded restaurant scenario. The next generation has many options to engage in stories and art, so why not take advantage? Mobile picture books allow kids to look at the same pictures featured in a traditional book, they can listen to the story read by a narrator (or even their own family), and kids have the option of having the pages turn automatically or they can touch the screen to turn the page. But most important, it’s an opportunity for children to learn to read integrated with the wonders of art and technology.
There are many apps out there to download digital books. Here are a few…
-International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL)
-MobiStories
Many authors are embracing this new technology, including author/ illustrator Elizabeth Dulemba, who recently announced the debut of her iPhone app for Lula’s Brew. Watch it in action…
Kindle Application for the iPhone!

Man, I WISH I had an iPhone and a Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)! I’m a marketer’s dream in that I’m always reeled in by the hottest, coolest, new gadgets out there and these two top the list. If you need a little bit more convincing…Amazon has just released a Kindle application for the iPhone and it’s FREE! Turns out, with the app, every book you purchase for your kindle is available on your iPhone. All you have to do is download the free Kindle for iPhone application and their new Whispersync technology saves and synchronizes your reading location across your Kindle and your iPhone. Now you can read a few pages on your iPhone and pick up right where you left off when you return to your Kindle.
The only negative is that the application doesn’t connect to the Kindle store, so you must access the Web browser on your iPhone, iPod or computer to buy the content.
FYI: Amazon currently has 240,000 books available for the Kindle, and its library will grow.
Publisher Simon & Schuster said the program’s release was a plus. Some of the company’s e-books are already available on the iPhone and iPod through Stanza and a program by ScrollMotion called Iceberg. Looks like Amazon’s keeping up with the competition!

It was a tough week in the world of publishing, but two of the big trade houses: Penguin Books and Random House had some big announcements regarding the digital age.
Penguin Group USA announced a new program called Penguin 2.0. It included two programs, both centered around a new section on the Penguin Web site which will feature a new blog and access to exclusive Penguin content such as enhanced e-books, videos and special print products. And it also features Penguin Personalized which will allow consumers to add a custom dedication to particular Penguin books, which will be printed POD and shipped. Penguin is starting the program with a holiday-themed title: A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings by Charles Dickens. A dozen more titles will be added in the next few months.
The other piece of Penguin news is Penguin Mobile, an iPhone app, available for free from the Apple App store. The application makes the features of the Web site—the blog, book previews, podcasts, news and Penguin-specific book-finding tools—available on the iPhone.

The e-book offerings in the iPhone just grew significantly with the announcement of a partnership between Fictionwise, one of the largest e-tailers of digital books, and Stanza. What is Stanza? Stanza is a FREE application for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Use it to download from a vast selection of over 100,000 books and periodicals, and read them right on your phone. It’s a wireless electronic library that stays open 24/7.Through this partnership, 40,000 titles from Fictionwise.com will be made available for direct purchase and download through the Stanza by Fictionwise store accessed through the Stanza iPhone application.
Random House also announced a partnership with Stanza, through which e-books by several RH authors will be available for free through Stanza.
